An Understudied Type of Breast Cancer Poses a Lurking Threat
With ongoing support from the Dynami Foundation, Dr. Matthew Sikora of the University of Colorado Cancer Center is conducting research focused on understanding the unique cell biology of lobular breast cancer (ILC) to develop better treatments for this subtype, which is often harder to detect and is associated with lower long-term survival rates compared to other breast cancers.

Fighting back against breast cancer – and becoming your own CEO

Visit With Some of Scientists at University of Michigan Shaping the Future of Lobular Breast Cancer Research
November 2025
Our founder Flora Migyanka visited the laboratories of several leading breast cancer researchers at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, with more of our research partners to be highlighted in next week’s update.
These investigators—and their teams of dedicated trainees, postdocs, and scientists—are at the forefront of discovering how metastatic lobular breast cancer evolves over time. With support from the DYNAMI Foundation, they are studying circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cell-free tumor DNA (ctDNA) to track the genetic changes that occur during endocrine or immune therapy.
Their work is uncovering how new cancer clones appear, how resistance forms, and how treatments can be personalized in real time—long before traditional scans reveal progression. Studies show that CTCs, ctDNA, and tumor tissue provide complementary insights, and that different cancer clones can expand or shrink in response to therapy. Ultimately, this research could help tailor more precise, personalized treatment strategies for patients as their cancer evolves.
This is urgently needed, high-impact research that has the potential to change outcomes for women with lobular breast cancer. And it is made possible because of the generosity of our community.
Daniel F. Hayes, M.D. (Stuart B. Padnos Professor of Breast Cancer Research; Professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology;), Founder Flora Migyanka, James Rae, Ph.D. (Professor of Pharmacology, Rogel Cancer Center), Jonathan Sexton Ph.D. (Associate Professor, Internal Medicine (Gastroenterology & Hepatology); Associate Professor, Medicinal Chemistry, College of Pharmacy; Director, U-M Center for Drug Repurposing), and the University of Michigan research teams during our lab visit, including group photos and behind-the-scenes moments from ongoing lobular breast cancer studies.
57,000 For Michigan Women in Need: 3rd Annual Uncork Up North Check Presentation
November 2025
Thanks to the incredible generosity from our 3rd Annual Uncork Up North, we were honored to present a $57,000 grant to Munson Healthcare’s Cowell Family Cancer Center in Traverse City.
These funds will provide direct grants to women in Northern Michigan who are battling breast cancer — covering essentials such as transportation to treatment, childcare, groceries, rent, utilities, and so much more. These dollars go straight to the women who need it most, easing the overwhelming financial strain that often comes with a diagnosis.
This impact was made possible by the extraordinary Up North hospitality community — chefs, wineries, restaurants, donors, and friends — who came together to raise over $115,000 in support of breast cancer patients.
Your generosity is changing lives for women across Michigan.

This holiday season, we are honored to support five women through the Jennie Bicknell Memorial Fund, providing essential financial relief during one of the most challenging moments of their lives. These grants help cover critical needs such as transportation to treatment, groceries, childcare, and daily living expenses that quickly become overwhelming during cancer care.
Our founder visited the Karmanos Cancer Institute to present the first two grants of the season alongside Hadeel Assad, M.D., Medical Oncologist & Co-Leader, Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, and Linda A. Filipczak, RN, BSN, MBA, Philanthropy Officer, both of the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Among the recipients was Sonia, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at just 25 years old. Her courage is extraordinary, and we are honored to help lighten her burden.
We are thinking of Sonia, Farjana, and all five women who receive Jennie Bicknell Memorial Grants this year. Your generosity and donation makes this support possible — and deeply meaningful.
